Neptunes back in water, earn fourth at opening meet of KSSA season

The Nelson Neptunes are back!

Following a one-season hiatus due to renovations at the Nelson and District Aquatic Centre, the Heritage City club experienced its first action as the Neptunes hosted the first meet of the 2014 Kootenay Summer Swim Association Season this past weekend in Nelson.

“For the Neptunes it was highly successful, placing fourth place out of eight teams in total, but more importantly, the amount of improvement seen by all swimmers was excellent,” said Neptune coach Cynthia Pfeiffer.

Castlegar Aquanauts dominated the meet winning going away with 636 points.

Surprising Grand Forks was second with 318 points followed by Trail at 255 and host Neptunes at 246.

Kimberley, Revelstoke, Creston and Colville, Wash., rounded out the field.

Individually, Sage Cowan who won gold in Division six girls to lead Nelson.

Coach Cynthia Pfeiffer also topped the podium in Division eight girls while Afford was third.

Morgan Roberston-Weir, in Division one girls, Cameron Bibby-Fox, in Division two boys, Ohia Wintraub in Division four girls and Olivia Cowan, in Division five girls, all won bronze medals.

Riley Andursak set meet records for Nelsonin 25-meter freestyle, 25-meter backstroke and 25-meter butterfly while teammate Lachlan Bibby-Fox set a new mark in 25-meter backstroke. 

“We were very happy with all the swimmers enthusiasm and effort this weekend and we know that this will be carried through the rest of the summer,” Rebecca Afford said.
