It’s been a long season for the Nelson Neptunes swim team and coach Rebecca Afford.

The season came to an end last week during the B.C. Summer Swim Championships in Nanaimo, but not before Afford was named winner of the Jelli Orrell Memorial Spirit of the Kootenays Award.

The rookie coach earned the honour at the Kootenay Regional Swim Championships earlier this month in Colville, Washington.

“I was elated to win this award,” Afford exclaimed.

“I am one of the youngest coaches in the region and I have been working so hard to make this season a success for the swimmers. Getting this award definitely solidified my confidence and knowledge of this sport.”

The award is voted on by coaches in the Kootenay Summer Swim Association.

The winner is a former Kootenay swimmer who graduates into the coaching ranks. The recipient must demonstrate excellent leadership qualities and positive approaches to coaching.

Afford is a veteran of the Neptunes program having joined at a young age before becoming one of the best swimmers ever to compete in Nelson.
