Nelson's Samuel Matthew leads Kootenay medal parade at BC Summer Games

Local athletes took a host of medals at the BC Summer Games held this past weekend in Nanaimo.

Samuel Matthew of Nelson led the medal parade by claiming six podium finishes in the pool.

Matthew, won silver medals in 200-meter boys Individual Medley and 800-meter freestyle along with bronze in 100 meter Breaststroke, 400-meter boys IM, 200-meter backstroke and 200-meter breaststroke.

May Collinson and Theresa Timmermans won silver in Girls C-2 2000 Meter Canoe while Relmu Wilson-Valdes, Henry Leishman, Quinn Currie, Ben Woodward and Joe Timmermans, all of Nelson, won silver in Boys C-2 2000 meter Canoe race.

Leishman, Currie, Woodward and Timmermans won silver in Boy’s C-4 500 meters Canoe race.

Team Kootenay then combined to win bronze in Boys/Girls C-4 500 meters open.

In the Equestrian ring, Noor Lammers won bronze in the Boys/Girls Vaulting Division D – Canter event with a final score of 5.865.

Noor then finished seventh and fourth, respectively, in two other vaulting events.

In athletics, Nelson athletes Spencer Atkins placed 11th and 12th in Boys 300 meters and 800 meters, respectively while Keiran Marchand was 14th and 13th in Boys 1200 meters and 2000 meters.

In golf, Team Kootenay consisting of Kevin Nesbitt of Trail, Nathan Nichol of Cranbrook, Justin Sawley, Kira Dereniwsky and Alysha Buchy of Kimberley, Dugan McInnes of Nakusp, Jeff Ashton of Castlegar, Jordan Field of Christina Lake and  Ethan Paton of Salmo, won the team silver medal.

Paton finished 18th place individually.

Fraser Valley Delta finished the games with the most medals (207), edging out Vancouver Island Central Coast, which finished with 183. Vancouver Squamish was third with 125 medals followed by Fraser River Delta and Thompson/Okanagan.

Team Kootenay athletes finished in sixth spot with one goal, nine silver and 13 bronze for 23 medals.

Port Alberni Wrestler, Nolan Badovinac was recognized with the W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence, finishing with two gold medals at the 2014 BC Summer Games and an impressive resume of sport and leadership success.

Badovinac receives a $2500 bursary to support his future sport or educational expenses.



The City of Nanaimo was a suberb host with over 3200 volunteers working on every detail of the planning and staging of the Games.  Local businesses contributed in excess of $900,000 as to support the Games. 


The next BC Summer Games is set for 2016 in Penticton.
