Nelson’s Rowan Megale proved he can compete with the best in BC after capturing a gold medal at the BLM Barbell Showdown held recently in Abbotsford.

Megale, 17, set a new provincial record in the squat discipline while capturing the top prize in the 93-kg weight category.

Powerlifting is a weight lifting discipline that involves three types of heavy lifts: squats, bench and deadlift.

To win the gold medal, Megale lifted 192.5 kg in squats, 117.5 kg bench press and 217.5 in the deadlift.

Megale's winning squat lift beat the old record of 190 kg.

The BLM Barbell Showdown was the first competition for the L.V. Rogers High School Grade 12 student, who has been lifting at the Nelson and District Community Complex for the past three years.

Megale, a member of the LVR Bombers Rugby team, now he has his sights set on the provincial powerlifting championships in June.

Megale said he'd like to take his lifting all the way to the nationals.

"People think a two-hour workout is the hardest thing," said Megale.  "But it's what you do with the other 22 hours of the day that matters."
