Nelsonites continue toss their support behind the Nelson Cares Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser.

More than 300 people braved sub-zero temperatures to raise money for the homeless in Nelson during the fourth annual event.

“It’s just remarkable,” said Nelson Cares Coldest Night of the Year organizer Kate Nott after leading the opening ceremonies in the courtyard of Distance Education School in Uphill.

“And we’ve smashed our goal, yet again.”

Organizers are amazed at the continued support by the community, as the Nelson event raised $36,515 prior to one single person setting foot on the walk.

The total ranks Nelson in 42nd spot overall of the $4,275,943 mark raised across Canada.

“I think people are really committed to this event year after year because they see the difference it’s making in the community,” Nott explained. “From the completion of the Ward Street Place Project to the Ready For Home program Nelson Cares is offering.”

The funds are slated for the Our Ready For Home program to provide support for homeless individuals ready for housing, individuals newly housed and those at risk of losing their housing.

The Nelson Cares website said the core of Ready For Home is a paid staff member who works one-on-one with individuals to find housing, to transition into affordable housing and to sustain them in their existing accommodation.

“People really care about affordable housing and taking care of each other,” Nott said.

“And we’re really seeing that in our numbers.”

The super-fun, family-friendly event is held across Canada on the last Saturday of February, this year February 24.

The Coldest Night of the Year event allows fundraisers to experience what homeless feel during a cold winter's night and challenge faced by those experiencing homelessness during winter.

The top fundraising teams included, Kootenay Dance Beat, Kootenay Rhythm Dragons, Lakeside Physio, Board Support, Rosemont Elementary, Selkirk Nursing, Stepping Stones, Wildflower School and Wolf Pack.
