Nelson Police Department welcomes newest member Thursday at Nelson Courthouse

The Nelson Police welcomed its newest officer, Constable #84, in a swearing in ceremony at Nelson Provincial Court Thursday.
Provincial Court Judge Donald L. Sperry performed the honours, swearing in Constable Adam Sutherland to the Nelson Police Department after serving almost eight years as a correctional officer with BC Corrections.
Const. Sutherland worked at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre until 2015 when he moved to Prince George to continue his career with corrections and to be with extended family.
Sutherland was selected from amongst 110 applicants for the rare opportunity to become a police recruit. He will commence training on January 25th, 2016 at the Justice Institute of BC.
Both Sutherland and his wife grew up in a small community and look forward to raising their two boys in Nelson.
When not policing, Sutherland enjoys running, weightlifting and outdoor activities, including kayaking, hiking and camping.
Sutherland, excited about the prospect of returning to downhill skiing, something he did in his youth, follows the latest two recruits to the NPD force — Christopher Duncan in March of 2015 and Constable Matthew Caldwell sworn in November 2014.
