Nelson Leafs host 2019-20 KIJHL Training Camp

In the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, players come and players go.

The Nelson Leafs invite some of those newbies beginning Friday for the team’s annual Training Camp at the NDCC Arena. The camp runs through Sunday with intra-squad games and off-ice sessions.

Some of the new players expected to make an impact with the Green and White this season are Nelson Minor Hockey products Curt Doyle, Tyler Badger and Reid Vulcano, Leafs’ veteran forward Jackson Zimmerman, forward Jaden Shumilak and defencemen Tyson Meier and Max Hurring.

Shumilak and Hurring come to the Leafs from Winnipeg Thrashers AAA and New Zealand, respectively, while Meier was acquired from the Kimberley Dynamiters in a trade that send forward Easton Jolie to the Nitros.

Of course, following every season, players move on and Nelson was no different as the Leafs graduated a few to college and Junior A.

Leaf captain Jack Karran has moved 50 kilometers west to Castlegar to play with the Selkirk Saints of the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League.

Karran will play against teammate Caiden Kreitz, who is signed up with Victoria Vikes.

Nelson also saw defencemen Kalem Hanlon and Tulsen Fawcett ink deals with Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) — Hanlon with La Ronge Ice Wolves and Fawcett with SJHL’s Melfort Mustangs.

Nelson opens the exhibition season September when the team visits defending KIJHL champion Revelstoke Grizzlies. The teams play a return contest Wednesday, September 4 at the NDCC Arena.

Nelson concludes the preseason with a home-and-home sked against Beaver Valley Nitehawks. Teams play in Nelson Friday, September 6 and in Fruitvale Saturday, September 7.

The two-time defending Neil Murdoch regular season champs open the 2019-2020 KIJHL season at home Friday, September 13th against Fernie Ghostriders.

LEAF NOTES: Nelson announced its behind the bench team for the upcoming season. Back as an assistant coach is former Leaf Blake Arcuri as well as trainers Garth Georgetti and Stathis Dimopolus. Joining the Leafs as goalie coach is Connor Potter.
