Thanks to the Osprey Community Foundation, the bank account at KidSport Nelson just got a little bigger.

The Osprey Memorial/Legacy Funds department made the donation the memory of Slim Porter and Mary Woodward.

The Slim Porter Memorial Fund was created in the name of the coach of the Fairview Athletic Club in the 1940s, which was known for ensuring everyone was able to play sports, regardless of financial standing.

Porter was known to give generously of his time and money to help kids participate in sports.

These ‘kids’ – now all grown up – recently established the Slim Porter Memorial Fund in his honour and welcome further donations to the fund.

The income from it will carry on Porter’s legacy; helping financially challenged local youth to participate in sports.

Meanwhile the Mary Jean Woodward was set up in the name of a woman who touched many with her kindness and love of the outdoors.

In her honour, the Woodward family is creating a permanent legacy fund.

Income from the fund will be used to help girls play sports.

The KidSport concept was hatched in 1993 by board and staff at Sport BC as a way to help address the challenges faced by many families when registering their children in organized sport.

From a modest start in that first year, issuing $35,000 in grants, KidSport has grown exponentially across the country and has become a truly national entity with 11 provincial/territorial chapters and over 175 community based chapters.

Nelson KidSport got its start in 2007 during the Hockey Day in Canada celebrations.

Since 2007, Nelson KidSport has allocated $110,000 to more than 500 local kids for sport registration fees and a further $2500 for equipment.
