Nelson Fire Rescue help extinguish wildfire on Giveout Creek Road

Nelson Fire Rescue and BC Wildfire initial attack crew kept a small fire from spreading Monday afternoon south of Nelson on Giveout Creek Road.
Assistant Fire Chief Michael Daloise said emergency crews were called at 3:37 p.m. Monday that a witness was attempting to extinguish a wildfire south of the city.
“Upon arrival of the first crew the flames were largely knocked down by witnesses,” Daloise said in a media release adding that a total of four members of Nelson Fire Rescue responded to the call.
“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to contain fire and keep it from spreading. Crews had to extend hose approximately 300 feet up the hill into the bush to get to the area that was burning.”
Daloise said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, although hinted campfire or smoking material are likely related to this incident.
Daloise said Nelson Fire Rescue responded to the incident with one tender truck and one utility vehicle.
A Conservation officer along with BC Wildfire Service firefighters also arrived on scene to assist and investigate.
No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
Giveout Creek Road is approximately seven kilometers south of Nelson on Highway 6. The fire was a few kilometers up Giveout Creek Road.
Daloise said with the recent spell of hot weather, Nelson Fire Rescue Services would like to remind the public to be especially careful with hot objects in the interface area.
Early Monday morning, Balfour/Harrop Fire Department, which assistance from North Shore Fire Department and BC Wildfire firefighters, kept a fire near Balfour from spreading at the end of Rogers Road.
