A fire near Kootenay Lake Hospital was quickly contained due to fast action by Nelson Police and Fire Departments late Wednesday night said Assistant Fire Chief Michael Daloise in a media release.

Daloise said Nelson Fire Rescue Services took the call at 10:45 p.m. of a report that smoke, flames and embers were coming from the front of a house at 15 View Street.

Before two on-duty members arrived, Nelson Police responded and were able to get close enough to the fire to discharge a portable dry chemical fire extinguisher which knocked down some of the fire.

Fire crews arrived to first ensure occupants were out of the house and make sure that the fire had not spread to the inside of the structure.

“There was a considerable amount of smoke inside the structure and fire crews needed to set up large fans to exhaust as much as possible,” Daloise explained.

“Crews were able to completely extinguish the fire before it spread to the inside of the house.”

Daloise said the fire appears to have originated in the area of the front porch, and only damaged the exterior.

“Nelson Fire Rescue responded to the incident with two fire engines, and one utility vehicle,” Daloise said.

“No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.  Damage is estimated at $5000.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

Daloise said Nelson Fire Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to ensure that all smoking material is always discarded in an appropriate receptacle, especially with the hot dry weather upon us.
