Residents near the 500 block of Lakeside Drive received an early wakeup call Monday when Nelson Fire and Rescue Services responded to a fire at the rear of the Superstore Mobil gas station.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said in a media release the call came in at 4:49 a.m. of a fire to a structure at the rear of the gas bar at 502 Lakeside Drive.

“Upon arrival, the first arriving crew found heavy fire at the rear of the structure,” the Nelson Fire and Rescue Services media release said.

“A storage shed was completely involved in fire and flames were stretching upwards to the gas station canopy roof.

“Adjacent propane storage was also being impinged upon by the flames.”

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said the first-arriving crew’s primary objective was to knock down the flames that were threatening the propane storage, building and canopy structure.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services crews were able to quickly knock down the fire with onboard water (500 Gallons) and spent two hours overhauling and investigating the fire.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said the response involved six firefighters, two engines and one utility vehicle.

Two members of Nelson Police Department also assisted with the initial emergency response.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said there were no injuries.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time,” Nelson Fire and Rescue Services said.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind the public to check that their carbon monoxide and smoke alarms are working.
