It was a clean sweep for Nelson boxers at the Tacoma Golden Gloves tournament held recently in Washington State.

All four athletes won their respective divisions with impressive determination during the Golden Gloves competition in Tacoma. Stryder Sutton, Riel Martinez, Leah Eberle and Makalu Babott all returned at Golden Gloves Champs.

Here’s a roundup of the tournament:

Stryder Sutton, 13 years, 80-pound Junior B Division

  • Sutton fought Marthez Holland, from Tacoma, WA twice, winning the first fight to by split decision to win the Golden Gloves. The pair then agreed to meet again the second day in a match bout. Sutton was again victorious this time by Unanimous Decision. Great fights for Sutton, who is a two-time Provincial Champion and one of our brightest talents.

Riel Martinez, 13 years, 110-pound Junior B Division

  • Martinez fought a tough southpaw from Beaverton, OR, Fernando Reyes to win the Golden Gloves title. After a close first round Martinez took over the fight and dominated to seal the win.

Leah Eberle, 16 years, 119-pound Youth Division

  • Eberle had no one in her division and so was awarded the Golden Gloves Title on a walkover. She the moved up a weight division to challenge North Vancouver’s Emma Suttle. Suttle is a 2019 Provincial Champion and will be Leah’s team mate at the upcoming National Championships in Victoria BC. Eberle fought very well and had many good moments during the fight but ended up losing a close decision to a very talented boxer.

Makalu Babott, 15 years, 90-pound Junior C Division

  • Babott won his division unopposed as there was no one in his weight class. The big tournament atmosphere was a great learning experience for him as he prepares to go to Nationals in April.
