Nelson Assistant Fire Chief Michael Daloise would like to remind citizens to be vigilant that property is kept clena and fire safe as per the FireSmart Canada recommendations, especially in light of the Sitkum Creek wildfire.

“The Sitkum Creek fire is the closest one to the City of Nelson, but is not currently threatening any structures in the City limits or it’s infrastructure,” Daloise explained.

“Preparing your yard to prevent the spread of fire is very important, especially with the abundant debris from the recent wind storm.”

Daloise said in event that there is aggressive fire behavior in the area there is the potential for flying brands to be blown into residential areas and start fires, so keeping the yard clean of forested debris is very important.

Nelson Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone that if they would like to receive more information to contact the Regional District information line at 1-866-522-7701 as the fire is out of NFD jurisdiction.

The Sitkum Creek wildfire is just one of the many burning in the province due to the hot dry weather BC is experiencing.
