The race for the provincial NDP leadership touches down in Nelson Thursday night as five hopefuls vie for the crown of the official opposition.

The Osprey Room in the Best Western Baker Street Inn (7-9 p.m.) will host the quintet of Dana Larsen, Mike Farnworth, Adrian Dix, Nicolas Simons and John Horgan as they continue their debate on leadership, NDP-style.

Nelson is one of the nine stops on the tour — that began March 20 in Surrey — and it has been announced that the theme of family will be exclusive of the Heritage city. According to the party’s press release, the other themes include justice, education, health care, poverty, youth, environmental sustainability, jobs and energy.

The evening will be divided into two sections, with the first consisting of a three-question segment hosted by a moderator on the theme of family.

Five questions will be taken from the floor — submitted in advance online — in the second segment, with each candidate given an opportunity to respond. The five will be allowed to make a three-minute closing statement.

Questions from the floor will be collected at the event and are to be submitted in writing. They will be selected randomly.

The tour ends April 6 in Terrace and the new leader will be chosen April 17.
