NDCC Arena hosts both Major Midget tryout camps

The Nelson and District Community Complex was a beehive of activity this past weekend as midget-aged hockey players attended camps for the Female AAA Kootenay Wildcats and the Kootenay Ice of the BC Major Midget Hockey League.
Both camps, attracting players from throughout the Kootenay region, opened Friday before concluding Sunday at the NDCC Arena.
Head coach Rob Wright is returning for his second season with the Kootenay Ice.
Wright replaced Mario DiBella before the season started in 2013 for the Ice team that allows elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey.
The BC Major Midget winner has the opportunity each year to compete for the National Midget Championship.
The Ice are one of 11 teams in the Major Midget League.
Meanwhile Cary Fisher is back as skipper of the Wildcats, which plays in the six-team Female Midget AAA Hockey League.
The other teams are Fraser Valley Phantom, Northern Cougars, Thompson Okanagan Lakers, Vancouver Island Hurricanes and West Coast Avalanche.
The 2014 – 2015 FMAAA League will be entering its seventh season as the top female league in the province. The league has seen over 50 graduating players continue on to CIS, NCAA or ACAC opportunities.
