Mock disaster challenges local emergency agencies

The former Mount St. Francis Hospital was a beehive of activity Saturday morning as Emergency Agencies from throughout the region participated in the mock disaster exercise training scenario.
The training scenario was part of Emergency Preparedness Week.
The exercise required several agencies to work together to respond to a mock bus accident that involves mass “casualties” and hazmat conditions.
“This exercise allowed response agencies to share and practice their expertise,” said Nora Hannon, an emergency program coordinator with the Regional District of Central Kootenay.
Participating agencies include RDCK Emergency Services; four of the 18 RDCK volunteer fire departments, including Balfour Harrop Fire Department, Beasley Volunteer Fire Department, Blewett Volunteer Fire Department, North Shore Volunteer Fire Department; Nelson Police; RCMP; BC Ambulance Service; Kootenay Lake Hospital; Nelson Fire and Rescue; BC Corners Service; and Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure – West Kootenay District.
“We’re extremely grateful to everyone who participated in and supported this event, including members of the public who endured the rain to bring this event to life,” added Hannon.
“The event strengthened relationships between the agencies and helped us practice life-saving skills.”
Emergency Preparedness Week is a national awareness initiative that has taken place annually since 1996.
It is a collaborative event undertaken by provincial, regional and local emergency management organizations supporting activities at the local level, in concert with Public Safety Canada and partners.
