Nelson Police said in a media release Sunday that the man involved in a street incident that cost the life of an Abbotsford Police Officer in July 2020 in the Nelson downtown has now been charged with Manslaughter.

Nelson Police said Sunday that 26-year-old Castlegar resident Alex Willness has been arrested by police and remains in custody pending a court appearance on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.

“Nelson Police Department (NPD) has confirmed that a charge of Manslaughter has been approved in regard to the 2020 death of off-duty Abbotsford police Constable Allan Young,” the NPD media release said.

“Young was assaulted in Nelson BC on July 16, 2020 and succumbed to his injuries on July 21, 2020.”

Nelson Police and BC Ambulance were called to an incident in the 500 block of Baker Street to find the 55-year-old Abbotsford Police Officer seriously injured.

Nelson Police said at the time it appeared that one male was causing a disturbance in the roadway when the victim approached and a physical altercation ensued.

The off-duty Abbotsford officer was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
