Two people are facing assault charges after Nelson Police were called to a pair of complaints in the downtown core of the Heritage City.

Early Sunday morning (April 9), officers were flagged down after an altercation occurred in a parking lot of a local business Nelson Police Department Sergeant Corey Hoy said in a media release Monday.

Hoy said officers were advised that a male had pepper sprayed two other men and had fled the area.

Hoy said police identified the suspect and located the male later in the evening.

“The male was arrested for assault with a weapon (two counts), possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and three breaches of a court order,” Hoy said.

“The male was remanded into custody and will appear for court later this week for a bail hearing.”

Emergency Health Services and Nelson Fire Rescue were called to the location to administer treatment to the affected males of the pepper spray.

In March, (March 22) Hoy said officers were requested to attend an assault complaint in a local downtown business in the late afternoon.

Hoy said a male known to police had slapped the complainant on the buttocks in front of the complainant’s child while in a parking lot.

“The male was unknown to the complainant but was located by police nearby,” Hoy said. “The male was arrested for sexual assault and was released to attend court at a later date.”
