A man camping southwest of Creston was attacked by a grizzly bear Saturday morning said the B.C. Conservation Service.

The man, camping on the shore after kayaking on the Kootenay River near the East Kootenay town, was surprised at approximately 6 a.m. The man, taking a morning walk, was mauled but did manage to escape before calling 911.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service said the man after kayaking to safety was taken by ambulance to Creston hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his head, arm and legs.

Although grizzly bears are common in this part of the province, the BC Conservation Service said these attacks are rare.
