Man accused of stabbing on Kelowna transit bus appears in court Monday

The man accused of stabbing a passenger on a transit bus in Kelowna Thursday appeared in court Monday in the Central Okanagan City.

Tyler Jack Newton, 24, was in court to answer second-degree murder charges for the stabbing of 55-year-old Caesar Rosales of Kelowna.

Newton, who decided not to seek bail, will be back in court for a scheduled second appearance on November 20.

Newton is known to police and has an extensive criminal history.

RCMP in Kelown have now laid  a charge of second-degree murder against a suspect arrested Friday after a man was fatally stabbed in the neck in an apparent random attack on a busy bus Thursday evening.

RCMP did not release the name of the person who is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Police announced the arrest of the man around 7 p.m. PT Friday after telling a news conference they knew who they were looking for and expected to arrest him shortly.

The fatal attack occurred around 6:30 p.m. PT Thursday when the bus with about 20 people aboard stopped at a bus stop on Baron Road behind the Dilworth shopping centre.

Witnesses told police one man in his 20s stabbed another in his 50s in the neck.

Report has Kelowna police arresting suspect involved in transit bus stabbing

It’s being reported Friday night that Kelowna RCMP have a suspect in custody after a manhunt to find the person responsible for the stabbing of a middle-aged man on a transit but Thursday, but have released no further details.

Kelowna Supt. Nick Romanchuk told reporters Friday police are certain the know the suspect and are confident the case will be solved.

The transit bus was heading to the UBC-Okanagan campus with 15 to 20 passengers when the apparently random attack happened on Baron Road at the bus stop just before Leckie at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The assailant, believed to be in his 20s, was walking off the bus when he made a “shoving” motion toward the victim, a 55-year-old Kelowna man. Police said he used a weapon.

RCMP Cst Kris Clark said they are searching for a murder suspect after a 55-year-old Kelowna man was fatally injured on a city transit bus Thursday evening.
 
Clark said Thursday (October 30) at 6:29 p.m., the Kelowna RCMP received a report of an assault on a city transit bus on Baron Road behind Dilworth Centre.

“The bus was northbound on Baron Road from Orchard Park Mall when it stopped at Underhill Street,” Clark said in a media release.

“According to witnesses, as the male suspect left the bus, he made a shoving motion towards the victim, who was also a passenger.

“The victim was found immediately after suffering from a serious injury which resulted in his death. Contrary to what was initially reported, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
 
RCMP said the name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
 
A Police Service Dog was called to the scene and quickly established a track but the suspect was not located.

Through the course of the investigation, police have identified persons of interest but the suspect remains at large at this time.
 
“The preliminary investigation suggests this to be a random incident. We know that crimes of this nature are always disturbing to the community,” says Superintendent Nick Romanchuk, Commander of the Kelowna Regional RCMP.

“I would like assure the public that all resources needed for the investigation are currently in place and every effort is being made to identify and apprehend the suspect as soon as possible.”
 
The Kelowna RCMP Serious Crime Unit continues to investigate and is looking for anyone with any information that might identify the suspect.
