The future looks bright for L.V. Rogers Cross Country Running Team after one of the members captured the Gold Medal at the BC High School Championships held recently at Jericho Beach in Vancouver.
Grade 9 student, Matti Erickson, won the Junior Boy’s race in a time of 17 minutes and 26 seconds.
The time was nine seconds ahead of Keaton Heisterman of Brentwood College on Vancouver Island.
“I won BC clubs, so I came in not really thinking I was going to win but I wanted to be up there with the elite group and see what I could do,” Erickson said during a post-race interview.
Erickson said he played a game of cat and mouse with Heisterman before pulling away at the end.
“I knew that he was going to run fast and put an edge in at the 3-km mark, so I just tried to put some moves on him before that and make sure the pace was fast enough so that we were both hurting together,” Erickson said.
Mallard's Source for sports would like honour the entire Bombers Cross Country squad with Team of the Week accolades.
The team includes, Matti Erickson, Stevie McCulloch, Noah Malenfant, Dylan Gyr, Zoe Taylor, Avie Waterfall and coach Alex Ulaszonek.
