Maida, Leafs cruise to 8-0 shellacking of Spokane Braves

Any controversy off the ice doesn’t appear to be affecting the Nelson Leafs on the ice.
For the third time this season the Leafs scored an overwhelming victory over a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League opponent.
Adam Maida stopped all 24 shots and four different players — Dylan Williamson, Timothy Nichols, Rayce Miller and Nolan Percival — registered two points to pace the Leafs to a convincing 8-0 shellacking of the hometown Braves Saturday night in KIJHL action in Spokane.
The win allows Nelson, 14-4-2-1, to maintain a four-point lead in the Murdoch Division over both Beaver Valley and Castlegar.
Nelson held leads of 3-0 and 4-0 in the game.
Williamson, Austin Lindsay, Miller, Aaron Dunlap, Nichols, Aaron Brewer, Robson Cramer and Aidan Gieger scored for the Leafs.
Nelson, which held most of the territorial play with a 46-24 shots advantage, scored three times on the power play.
Maida, winner of four of his last five games, was solid to record his second win of the weekend.
The Leafs continue a road swing with stops Saturday in Castlegar and Sunday afternoon in Beaver Valley against the defending KIJHL champs.
Leafs new recruit pays instant dividends as Nelson dumps Cats Friday
The newest member of the Nelson Leafs made his debut in grand style.
Drew Carter scored a goal and added an assist to spark the Leafs to a 5-2 victory over the Creston Valley Thunder Cats Friday in the East Kootenay City.
The 6’1″, 165-pound Carter, acquired in a deal completed Friday with Osoyoos Coyotes that sent Brett Soles to the Coyotes, scored in the first period as Nelson took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.
Rayce Miller had the other marker in the opening frame.
Carter then assisted on Nelson’s fifth goal by Austin Lindsay to seal the win. Lindsay and defenceman Robson Cramer also finished with two points.
Tim Nichols and Leaf captain Aaron Dunlap scored the other goals for Nelson, which was out shot 24-23 by the Thunder Cats.
Tyler Fyfle scored twice in the third period for Creston.
Adam Maida was solid in goal to register the win for Nelson.
Brandon Locket, a 17-year-old netminder also acquired in the Soles deal, was the back up for Maida.
Nelson also receives futures in the Soles deal from Osoyoos.
Soles was one of three players suspended by the Leafs for violating team rules.
BLUELINES: Next home game for Nelson is Wednesday, November 19 against Grand Forks. . . . Saturday’s 8-0 trashing, which avenged a 4-3 loss to Spokane last Sunday, was a third 8-0 win of the season for Nelson. The Leafs scored an 8-0 win Friday, September 19 over Beaver Valley in Fruitvale before pounding Golden Rockets by the identical score Saturday, October 25 at home. . . .Leaf defenceman Robson Cramer continues to do more than defend as the 20-year-old rearguard now leads Nelson in scoring with 25 points, including eight goals and 17 assists. Cramer is currently riding a six-game points streak and has registered at least one point in 10 of the last 11 games. Rayce Miller and Matt MacDonald are both two points behind Cramer. . . .Drew Carter, acquired Friday from Osoyoos in the Brett Soles deal, registered a point in his second consecutive game with Nelson. . . .Six players were whistled for 10-minute misconducts Saturday in a wild third period.
