Local Millennials inspire smart conversation

A packed house of people jammed the KC Restaurant Monday night to hear what a local group of entrepreneurs from the Millennial Generation had to say about running a business in the Heritage City.

The evening, sponsored by The Nelson Daily in with Selkirk Paving Ltd. and Startup Nelson, was also streamed live on Facebook to viewers throughout the social media network.

With MC Matt DeVito of Vince DeVito Shoes leading the forum as MC, entrepreneurs Jobina Mah of KC Restaurant, realtor Luke Mori of RE/MAX RHC, Dancing Bear Inn co-owner Jamie Renney, and Clay and Chase Rickaby, manager of New Grand Liquor Store and owner/operator of Tamarack Media Co., respectively, discussed the journey of running a business in the Heritage City.

Josh Secord of Torchlight Brewing Co. was also in attendance to offer his thoughts of running a small business.

“We wanted to showcase the innovation and inspiration that young entrepreneurs have in Nelson,” said Deb Fuhr, Ad Manager for The Nelson Daily, one of the main drivers of the evening.

“We feel the panel did not disappoint, giving everyone insight as they set out on their journey.

"And Nelson is in good hands if this is sample size of the days ahead."

The evening was streamed live on The Nelson Daily Facebook site, as well as shared on Startup Nelson.

After DeVito introduced the panel to the audience with a short bio on each of the entrepreneurs, the discussion began with topics ranging from running a business to marketing ideas and struggles of being young in business dominated in Nelson mostly by owners from the Baby Boomer Generation.

Most of the panel gave credit to their parents for instilling a solid work ethic as a key to their success.

The lively discussion was aided by comments and questions from the audience.

Most of the panel attended school in Nelson and graduated from L.V. Rogers High School.

Some of the entrepreneurs left Nelson to attend university or travel the world before returning to their roots in the Heritage City.
