Wednesday at the Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce the Regional District of Central Kootenay, City of Nelson and BC Parks is hosting a Community Wildfire Protection Plan Open House.

An Open House is also being planned for Redfish School near the Harrop Ferry turnoff on Highway 3A Thursday.

Both events run from 6-8:30 p.m.

Residents are invited to learn about draft community wildfire protection plans for the City of Nelson and RDCK Areas E and F as well as the draft Wildfire Management Plan for West Arm Provincial Park,” Nora Hannon Emergency Program Coordinator for the RDCK told The Nelson Daily.

“Specific objectives of this public meeting are to explain how the risks from wildfire to residences and critical infrastructure are identified; how these risks can be reduced on Crown land and what private land owners can do to reduce the risk of wildfire around their homes.”

Hannon said the RDCK, City of Nelson and BC Parks have worked collaboratively on these plans to address landscape level fuel breaks to protect area communities.

“Given the events of Fort McMurray, and the Sitkum and Rock Creek Fires, this topic should be a priority for local residents and their comments will help inform the completion of these plans,” Hannon said.

For more information contact Hannon at 250-551-0917 or John Cathro at 250-505-3513.
