Letter: Unhappiness in the BC Liberal Party

To The Editor:

On Andrew Wilkinson’s advertisement page is a description of three bills to come before the legislature:

  • Rigging the referendum on PR.
  • Changing the election date to give government  six more months in power.
  • Funneling taxpayer money to their political war chest.

Now, I’m quite sure the legislation described by Mr. Wilkinson has not been presented using the same phrasing.

The Wilkinson advertisement does highlight the adversarial and combative nature of our current political system.  Looking through rose coloured glasses, I would hope all political parties have the best interest of BC’s citizens in mind. With that consideration, it would seem more useful to offer suggestions on how the proposed legislation could work better and to have those suggestions thoughtfully considered.

Clearly, collaboration from all parties is a novel concept; but it could provide practice at what governance with proportional representation might look like.  More open dialogue is needed from all sides – not innuendo or name calling, for indeed, our elected representatives are collectively helping to run the business of the Province.
