To The Editor:

Last week turning at the junction onto the steep icy Cedar Street’s one way street system from Silica to Vernon St., I encountered a grey Toyota SUV speeding up the wrong way. I had to brake hard, skidded, missing the vehicle by a few inches. This is the second time I’ve met a vehicle coming up the same hill recently. A few days ago, a friend was startled by a van coming up the same hill the wrong way at the same junction, and had to swerve to avoid it.

While waiting at the junction of Cedar with Vernon last month, I witnessed a car turning, down a snowy Cedar St. speeding from Vernon St. past a posted no entry sign, the wrong way. On another occasion, At the same spot, I saw a driver coming up Cedar St. turning left onto Vernon St., in spite of the posted no left turn sign, and it just missed a vehicle coming down Vernon St. from Gyro Park, forcing them to swerve and brake hard.

Driving in Nelson with its hazardous terrain, narrow route ways and odd parking irregularities – plus blind corners, due to piled banks of snow – takes a lot of care and attention.

Mostly, drivers in Nelson take care, are patient and polite. But increasingly, it seems, there are a few reckless nincompoops who plainly disregard the rules of the road and seem to lack good old common sense.

Come on Nelson!

Rebellion and protest may have its place in society but not at the reckless endangerment of others. Let’s play the game.

Is there any way we can we take more care on the road and consider the dire consequences of your irresponsible actions?
