Dash Thompson and Game MVP Sawyer Hunt each had three points to power the Nelson Leafs to a convincing 7-2 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory over the Golden Rockets Friday night at the NDCC Arena.

The win, the third straight for the Leafs, keeps the Green and White at the top of the Murdoch Division, one point in front of the Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

The Hawks continue to be the hottest team in the KIJHL after collecting its ninth straight win with a 7-2 home-ice pasting of the Grand Forks Border Bruins.

Nelson held period leads of 2-0 and 5-0.

Jaiden LaPorte, Ryan Piva, Ethan Beattie, Hunt, Jack Karran, Ryan Cooper and Justin Podgorenko, with a late-game shorthanded tally, scored for the Leafs.

Piva and Cooper also had two points.

The Leafs inserted newly-acquired Sam Burford into the lineup. And the new-recruit did not disappoint as he stopped 20 of 22 shots to register the win in goal.

Nelson outshot the Rockets 44-22 in the contest.

The Leafs return to action Saturday in Creston against the Thunder Cats.

Nelson is 2-0 this season against the 2017 Cyclone Taylor host.

Next home action is Friday, November 3 at the NDCC Arena when Spokane Braves pay a visit to the Heritage City.
