Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation benefits from Nelsonites recycling

The Nelson Leafs hockey club and the Regional District of Central Kootenay joined together to present the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $3,500 Thursday at the Nelson Leafs Recycling Depot.
The funds come through a partnership between the RDCK and the Leafs in the beverage container recycling program at the Nelson Transfer Station that began in 2010.
Recycling bins provide residents with a convenient place to recycle refundable beverage containers while knowing that the profits from their donations are benefiting the community directly.
“The Central Resource Recovery Committee is pleased to continue to support the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation’s projects” said Tom Newell, Director for Electoral Area F and Chair of the Committee.
“This ongoing partnership between the Nelson Leafs and the RDCK continues to provide a meaningful benefit to the community.”
To date, the program has contributed over $46,000 to the KLH Foundation’s fundraising efforts the RDCK said in a media release.
Donations represent profits from beverage containers collected at the Lakeside Drive Recycling Depot (formerly the Nelson Transfer Station).
The RDCK would like residents to know all refundable beverage containers are accepted in the bins at the Lakeside Drive Recycling Depot — sorting is not required!.
Residents must place individual containers into the bins; no bulk loads are accepted.
Nicole Ward of the RDCK said large volumes of containers are accepted at the Recycling Centre (Bottle Depot) located at 120 Silica Street.
Ward went on to say that BC, approximately one billion beverage containers are recycled each year. R
ecycling saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and relieves pressure on non-renewable resources. This is all good for the environment and great for our community.
