Kootenay Lake Fishing Report

July 20th, 2020

We have started our season out on the west coast and it’s off to a great start.

There has been lots of Coho around to keep everyone busy while hunting for the big Chinooks. Some days have been a grind, but Chinook are showing up at the usual spots lately.  So far, the biggest Chinook we’ve seen on the dock is 33 pounds.

That’s a great sign for this early in the season.  Looking forward to what is coming along the coast line in the next month.

Halibut fishing has been off to a great start as well. Most days seem easy to troll up a limit of chickens, and some of the anchor spots have produced some big butts!

We were fortunate enough to have our family with us for a few days to start and they all got to experience some fantastic fishing and I think the kids are hooked.

Looking forward to the rest of the Summer.

Stay tuned for our west coast reports.

And while we have one boat on the coast, we still have a couple boats running on Kootenay Lake.

And here’s the latest reports:

Kootenay Lake

Our guides have been experiencing some great days on the lake. The inconsistent weather has kept the water a bit cooler than normal, and this has prolonged our good spring fishing.

Rainbows have been fairly consistent and we’re also managing to hook a few Bull Trout in the mix.

The local campgrounds are full and we have been entertaining local tourists for the past month. It’s great to show the locals what a great resource we have in our backyard.

Its been a good mix of families and friends.  Most trips have involved kids on the boat.  These are our favourite trips.  Anytime we can introduce a newcomer to fishing, it is a rewarding day.

Looking forward to what the rest of July will bring.

Stay tuned.

What are they biting on ???

On  Kootenay Lake, we have been catching mostly on our favourite Gibbs Delta croc spoons trolled right on the surface.  Also producing well for us are our favourite bucktail flies.  Same colors as before.  The bleeding gill (210), grey ghost (215), hillbilly (216) have all been working well.  As well as our #226 which is sill producing some good fish.

Down deep we have  been trolling the Gibbs Delta Lemon Lime flasher or the Oki Tackle green/yellow mist flasher followed by the green spatter back hoochie.  Favourite depths have been between 75 – 101 feet.

And on the west coast our best producers have been the Blue Footloose flasher or Blue Chrome followed by a few of our favourite spoons.  The 3″kingfisher spoons in “white lightning”, “herring aid”, and “cookies & cream” have been working best for us.  Fish have been spread out, but we’re still picking away at the usual spots along the rocks and getting rewarded with some big fish.

That’s it for now.  Short and sweet, as our time is limited for now.

Stay tuned.

Tight lines………………..
