Kootenay-Columbia MP says Canada Summer Jobs 2017 program great for employers

Just in time for Christmas, Kootenay-Columbia MP Wayne Stetski is touting an early present for employers throughout the riding to apply for federal funding to employ youth next summer.
“In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, this expanded Canada Summer Jobs program will help our young people find new job opportunities and gain valuable work experience,” Stetski said.
“At the same time, employers will be able to expand their summer workforce with little or no extra cost.”
Steski said the Canada Summer Jobs 2017 program allows allnot-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with up to 50 employees to apply for funding from the Government of Canada.
The program subsidizes summer jobs for full-time students aged 15 to 30 years old.
“Not-for-profit employers like museums and community organizations can receive up to 100 per cent of the minimum wage and mandatory employment-related costs,” Stetski said.
“While public-sector employers and small businesses can receive up to 50 percent.”
In Kootenay–Columbia, Canada Summer Jobs 2017 will focus on applications which complement a combination of national and local priorities, including support for:
- employers involved in activities celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary and other community events;
- communities with few employment opportunities for youth;
- agriculture, local food and the environment;
- tourism, arts and culture, not-for-profits;
- employers that hire Indigenous people;
- employers involved in the welcoming and settlement of immigrants in Canada;
- employers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sectors; and
- small businesses of less than 20 employees, working to become more innovative, competitive and successful, in recognition of their key contribution to the creation of new jobs.
“I am proud to support this annual program, which helps small employers and young people alike,” Stetski said. “This is a win-win for our communities.”
The application period runs until January 20, 2017. Applicants approved for funding will be able to hire students as early as April 2017.
