The City of Kimberley and the United Steelworkers Local I-405 ratified a four-year collective agreement.

The tentative settlement was previously agreed to on August 29th and replaces the previous contract that expired on February 29th, 2016.

“We are very pleased to have this new contract in place,” said Mayor Don McCormick, adding council gave unanimous consent to ratification at a special meeting Tuesday night.

“It reflects what we can afford and at the same time recognizes the value of our employees with a wage and benefits increase.”

Unionized employees will receive a 6% wage increase over the life of the contract.

Of the more important issues:

  • The current job evaluation system is being replaced by a to-be-determined system that better represents the interest of both the City of Kimberley and its employees. Representatives of the City and the Union will work on this in the upcoming months.
  • New employees are no longer eligible for the Special Vacation benefit. Current employees remain eligible for this benefit for as long as they are employed by the City of Kimberley.
  • Operators are eligible for promotion after a minimum number of hours on each of the pieces of equipment that they are expected to operate.
  • Other changes involve an increase in some benefits, language surrounding seniority, employee discipline and grievances, overtime, probationary period and several ‘housekeeping’ items.
