Police are reminding the public on the eve of the holiday season of the dangers of drinking and driving.

The message comes after a 39-year-old Castlegar man was caught driving in Nelson with blood alcohol allegedly three times the criminal limit said Sgt Chad Badry West Kootenay Traffic and Integrated Road Safety Unit Monday.

Badry said the incident occurred (Sunday) October 15, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. when RCMP was advised by the public of a possible possible impaired driver headed towards Nelson from the Kootenay Lake Ferry.

“A member of the local Integrated Road Safety Team responded to a report of a possible impaired driver headed towards Nelson from the Kootenay Lake Ferry,” Badry explained.

“He caught up to the driver on the bridge into Nelson.”

Badry said the driver was eventually pulled over and the subsequent investigation led to a breath demand.

“The driver’s blood alcohol was found to be 240 percent milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood,” he said.

“The criminal limit is 80 percent milligrams. Administrative sanctions for a Class 5 driver start at 50 percent milligrams and new drivers can not have any alcohol in their blood.”

Badry said thankfully, this driver was taken off the streets before any collisions or incidents had occurred.

“We encourage motorists to always report suspected impaired drivers,” Badry said.

“The driver was released on Promise to Appear in Nelson Court, a 24 hour driving Prohibition, and a three-month Administrative Driving Prohibition.

“As we start into the holiday season, police would like to remind drivers to refrain from driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” he said.

“It’s simply not worth the risk.”
