Interior Health issues Drug Alert for Nelson area

Interior Heath has issued a DRUG ALERT for the Nelson area after a sample believed to be cocaine tested positive for fentanyl. 

Interior Health said in a media release Wednesday, the overdose risk is very high when stimulant samples are contaminated with fentanyl.

“Please ensure your clients are aware of safer drug use tips that can help prevent overdose as well as where they can access naloxonedrug checking and other overdose prevention services in your community,” the Interior Health media release said.

Interior Health said there are steps to take — no matter if smoking, snorting, injecting — to prevent overdose:

  • Get drugs checked —find locations at drugchecking.ca
  • Avoid mixing
  • Use with others around or at an Overdose Prevention Site (OPS)
  • Start with small amount
  • Carry naloxone and know how to use it
