Impressive results from Kootenay Festival artists at Provincials

A trumpet player from Nelson took home the top prize in the music category at the recent Provincial Festival of the Arts in Victoria.

Nico Bucher of the Heritage City won the Junior Brass category, edging out Grayson Ringdahl of Greater Victoria Festival.

Bucher was competing under the Kootenay Festival banner.

Other winners from the Kootenay Festival included:

  • Sophie Hargreaves runner up in the Ballet I category. Sabina Nelson of Surrey Festival won the category with Hargreaves and Madison Kunz of Victoria Danceworks both finishing in the runnerup spot.
  • Lucas Alexander of the Kootenay Festival finishing second to Simon Forman of the Upper Island Festival in the Intermediate Woodwinds division.

Mya Robinson of the East Kootenay Festival received Honourable Mention in the Junior Classical Voice competition. The winner was Anjulie Djearam of the Greater Victoria Festival.

Each regional festival sends its most promising young artists between the ages of 10 and 28 years to participate in the annual Provincial Festival. The five-day event encompasses special master classes, lectures, coaching, workshops, technique classes and adjudications.
