Honourable Lieutenant Governor of BC, Judith Guichon tours West Kootenay

The Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, begins a six-day trip through the West Kootenays Monday.

The tour includes stops in Grand Forks, Christina Lake, Rossland, Warfield, Trail, Castlegar, New Denver, Kaslo, Nelson, Salmo, Fruitvale, Montrose and Creston.

The tour begins Monday in Grand Forks before proceeding Tuesday to Rossland and Trail and Castlegar Wednesday.

The Lieutenant Governor is appointed by the Governor General acting by and with the advice of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada.

Lieutenant Governors are normally appointed for a period of not less than five years.

Since the Statute of Westminster of 1931, Canada has been a fully sovereign state. The Governor General represents The Queen in Canada while Lieutenant Governors represent Her Majesty at the provincial level.

The first Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia was Sir Joseph Trutch in 1871; Judith Guichon was sworn-in as the province’s 29th Lieutenant Governor in 2012.

Thursday the Lieutenant Governor of BC begins in New Denver and Kaslo before completing the day with a Community Reception at Touchstones Museum of Art in Nelson beginning at 5 p.m.

Friday Honourable Judith Guichon has an assembly at Trafalgar Middle School before heading to Salmo and Fruitvale.

Saturday, the tour concludes in Creston highlighted with Her Honour riding with the Mayor Roy Toyota in the Blossom Festival Parade.

Thursday, May 14, New Denver

8 a.m.
Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre
306 Josephine St., New Denver
Her Honour will have tea with invited guests and tour the Centre.

9 a.m.
Kohan Reflective Garden
1st Ave., New Denver
Her Honour will tour the gardens.

9:30 a.m.
Slocan Community Health Centre
401 Galena Ave., New Denver
Her Honour will visit with local seniors. Students from Lucerne
Elementary school will also attend.

Events in Kaslo

11:30 a.m.
Kaslo Village Hall
412 Fourth St. Kaslo
Her Honour will meet the Mayor and Council and tour the Village Hall.

12:15 p.m.
SS Moyie Sternwheeler
324 Front St., Kaslo
Her Honour will tour and visit SS Moyie Sternwheeler, followed by a
high tea lunch for invited guests.

1:50 p.m.
J.V. Humphries Elementary Secondary school 500-6th St., Kaslo Her
Honour will address the students at an assembly.
