Hit-and-run call leads NPD to charging driver with careless driving

Nelson Police charged a man with careless driving after a vehicle was damaged in the 1000 Block of Front Street early Saturday morning.
The incident unfolded when NPD dispatch received a call of a hit-and-run on Front Street.
The person calling gave police a description of the vehicle that was later reported leaving Nelson, heading on Highway 3A towards Castlegar.
Police caught up to the vehicle, stopping the driver on Highway 3A west of Nelson without incident.
It was discovered that the 31-year-old driver had taken prescription medication that caused drowsiness.
The man was taken into custody and charged for the careless driving, hit-and-run and his license was suspended for 24 hours.
Police added many prescription medicines and over-the-counter drugs can leave you impaired under the Criminal Code.
There are of course some instances where you need to take prescribed medications (such as certain medical conditions like diabetes or epilepsy).
NPD asks the public to make sure toread the labels carefully and check with your doctor or pharmacist so you’re safe to drive while taking certain drugs.
Fence damaged at Nelson Airport by suspect vehicle
Nelson Police want to know what a vehicle doing driving on the Nelson Airport in the early hours of the morning?
Early Sunday, NPD officers were dispatched to a report of a car driving on the Nelson Airport at 2:45 a.m.
Police said the driver appeared to have then driven around the airport, looking for a way out but came back to the section of damaged fence and exited that way.
NPD officers attended and ensured none of the planes were damaged.
A City crew was called to secure the fence.
The incident was caught on video and the Nelson Police Department is investigating.
