A mudslide that closed the Trans-Canada Highway early Tuesday morning near Revelstoke had traffic stopped on the nation’s highway for over 12 hours.

The highway was expected to open at 5 p.m. Tuesday after the slide closed a stretch of highway in eastern B.C. between Revelstoke and Golden, about 20 kilometres east of Rogers Pass Summit at the boundary of Glacier National Park.

Traffic was delayed for the entire day as highways crews awaited the results of a geotechnical report on the stability of the site.

Heavy rain caused mud and trees and debris to flow down the mountain and over the highway, said a Parks Canada spokesperson.

No one was injured in the slide.

People heading north from Nelson through the area are asked to proceed with caution through the slide area and to expect delays.
