The Nelson Daily, in conjunction with Selkirk Paving and Startup Nelson, is hosting an evening of discussion with a group of Nelson business owners from the Millennial Generation who want to make the Heritage City home.

The local entrepreneurs are either starting their own business or have taken over an established place of work from their Boomer generation parents.

According to the BC Government, Small businesses are the economic engines of communities across the province, creating good jobs for workers in BC.

However, owning, and operating, small business can be a challenge for Boomers and Millennials alike.

Monday, November 27, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., these local entrepreneurs from Nelson will be front and center to discuss their visions, hopes and challenges in operating their respective businesses.

This will be an open forum discussion with questions directed from MC Matt DeVito.

The event is open to the public or can be seen on Facebook Live streamed to both Startup Nelson and The Nelson Daily pages.

The local group of Millennials participating in this event include:

  • Jobina Mah, KC Restaurant. — Mah, who graduated with a degree in architecture from Thompson Rivers University, recently returned to the Heritage City take over managing her father’s Japanese, Thai and Chinese restaurant on Baker Street with her sister Emerald.
  • Luke Mori, realtor with RE/MAX, RHC Realty, Nelson & Kootenay Real Estate. — Born and raised in Nelson, Mori, 24, has rapidly become one of Nelson’s top luxury real estate agents after getting into the field a few years ago.
  • Jamie Renney, owner/operator Dancing Bear Inn on Baker Street. — Even though Renney was born in Cranbrook and grew up in Alberta, she considers Nelson home after spending many holidays and summers in the Heritage City with family. Renny, whose mother Glenda is a native of Nelson, purchased the Dancing Bear Inn in 2016 with husband Tucker. Renney is expecting to launch another business in the New Year.
  • DeVito Brothers — Matt and Joel, Vince DeVitos Shoe & Orthotics. Matt and Joel are following in their father’s footsteps with the shoe store at 411 Hall Street in Nelson. This business started in 1926 in Trail, before moving to Nelson in 1980 and the DeVito boys are eager to continue it on for many years to come.
  • Rickaby Brothers — Clay, Chase and Addison. — The trio is involved in a few different ventures. Clay is currently manager of the New Grand Liquor Store after managing Empire Coffee Shop for the past three years. Chase and Addison are owner/operators of Tamarack Media Co. — which encompasses creative and strategic branding: professional film production, photography, social media management and strategy, graphic design and interior design.
