RCMP said a 33-year-old male is in critical condition following a two-vehicle accident that closed Highway 3A/6 west of Nelson for a considerable amount of time Wednesday evening.

RCMP Nelson Detachment and West Kootenay Traffic Services said Wednesday at 5:15 p.m., officers responded to a head-on collision a kilometer west of the Beasley Fire Hall — eight kilometers east of the South Slocan Junction — that resulted in a lengthy highway closure.

Police said the investigation found the driver of a westbound Honda Fit lost control and crossed the center line into the path of an eastbound Jeep Wrangler.

“The 34-year-old male driver of the Jeep from Nelson and his two young children were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” RCMP said. “The 33-year-old male driver of the Honda from Trail was transported to Kelowna in critical condition.”

Police said the driver of the Honda was not wearing his seatbelt and alcohol is considered a factor. RCMP said road conditions were good at the time of the accident.

The accident closed Highway3A/6 for most of Wednesday and into the early hours of Thursday while police assessed the scene.

The RCMP are requesting anyone who may have information concerning the investigation to call West Kootenay Traffic Services at 250-354-5180.
