Hawks edge LVR Bombers in OT to capture Consolation Crown

Rival J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks of Trail held off the L.V. Rogers Bombers in overtime to capture the Consolation Title at the Prince Charles Comets High School Boys’ Basketball Tournament Saturday in Creston.

The Hawks outscored the Bombers during the extra five minutes of play to claim the 82-76 victory.

Matti Erickson paced the Bombers attack with 21 points while Johnny Michalchuk added 16.

LVR opened the tournament with a 60-54 win over Sparwood Friday.

The win advanced the Bombers into the tournament semi-final, where LVR dropped an 89-55 decision to Fernie Falcons.

The Falcons were led by Asher Hannemann, who led all scorers with 35 points.

Replying for the Bombers were Erickson with 17 points and Michalchuk with 12.

The Bombers travel to Grand Forks Wednesday to meet the Wolves in the Boundary City in West Kootenay High School Senior Boys action.

The Junior Bombers play the Wolves in the preliminary contest at 4 p.m.

The Senior Bombers head west to the South Okanagan to play in the Desert Classic beginning Friday in Osoyoos.

Bombers face tough test in Trail

The L.V. Rogers Bombers dropped three straight games at the J. Lloyd Crowe Senior Girls’ Basketball Tournament this past weekend in Trail.

The Bombers lost the opener to Prince Charles of Creston Friday before dropping a close 41-34 game to Stanley Humphries of Castlegar and host J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks. Mount Baker Wild of Cranbrook won the tournament. Maddy Bonikowsky led the Bombers in scoring against SHSS with 20 points.

The Bombers host Grand Forks Wolves Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Hangar.
