There’s a new ball diamond in Nelson . . . which has the feel of Boston’s Fenway Park.

The Nelson and District Baseball Association recently took the wrappings off the new diamond at Lions Park in Uphill.

“The new diamond is ready for ready play for the 2013 season for our 11 and under baseball players in the Little League Minor and Youth Baseball Rookie and T-ball divisions which is about 85 players in 2012,” said Larry Martel of the NDBA.

Martel said the new diamond has been in the planning since 1997.  Money was raised through donations from local businesses and grants from the BC gaming grants.

The NDBA considered other locations in the city but those proved to be suitable or cost effective so Lions Park was put back into the mix.

The Lions Park diamond was in the NDBA system for 20 years before it became unsafe and for two years sat unused by local baseball.

All Terrain Landscaping came in with a great plan for the upgrade and the local Lions Club were on also board with the improvements.

NBA meet with the city staff and eventually the city council to talk about the upgrades throughout 2011 on how the improved diamond fits with the cities recreational plan.

The final go ahead was given in late November of 2011

All Terrain started the project once the snow melted in mid April.

Due to the wet spring and other minor delays, turf was not ready to be laid until early September.

“Thanks to All Terrain Landscaping, Karen McDonald and the staff at Nelson public works and to Mayor John Dooley and Councillor Bob Adams for championing this project,” Martel said.

“The field looks amazing and will be a great place for local athletes to play for many years to come.”
