Good news for residents near Poplar Creek

The Regional District of Central Kootenay Emergency Operations Centre said in a media release Monday that BC Wildfire Service has advised that the threat posed by the Rapid Creek wildfire has diminished enough to rescind the Evacuation Alert for all residents in the Poplar Creek area, effective immediately.
 
“To all RDCK residents, businesses and visitors in the area, please sign up to the RDCK Emergency Alert system which will inform users if a call to action is necessary in the event of an emergency or disaster,” the RDCK EOC said.

The Rapid Creek Wildfire started July 24 by lightning. The wildfire, located north of Lardeau and Poplar Creek west of Highway 31, is currently estimated at 1,400 hectares.

The Central Kootenay EOC would like to thank the Poplar Creek residents for their cooperation, and to all the agencies involved including BC Wildfire Service for their continued hard work and dedication.

Meanwhile, 4.5 kilometers south of Harrop/Proctor, Harrop Creek Wildfire is currently burning in steep and complex terrain and remains within the Narrows Creek drainage.

The Evacuation Alert remains for residents in Harrop/Procter/ Sunshine Bay / Kootenay Lake Village remains as the fire continues to experience minimal growth towards the community, with no significant precipitation over the weekend.

The BC Wildfire recommends the Evacuation Alert stay in place until Tuesday, with expectation of showers during the day Monday.

The Harrop Creek fire started July 27 by lightning. BC Wildfire Service estimates the fire at 3,117 hectares.
