It’s all about food next week, as Our Daily Bread prepares a huge Thanksgiving feast two days before a Food Security Faire in Nelson is set to celebrate World Food Day.

ODB will be serving dinner with all the trimmings at their new Kootenay Christian Fellowship Hall at 520 Falls Street, at 5 pm on Monday, October 14.

“We’re expecting anywhere from 120 to 150 people,” said Pastor Jim Reimer.

Reimer’s church runs a weekday lunch program for 60-70 people, but on Thanksgiving, they’re gearing up for double the amount.

“Our service is significantly different than a food bank,” Reimer said. “We are providing food in a social context.”

Monetary donations and volunteers for Thanksgiving dinner are always welcome, said Reimer.

The Nelson Food Cupboard at 602 Silica St. is usually open Mondays and Wednesdays but it will open next week on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the basement of the Nelson United Church.

And on Wednesday it hosted a Food Security Faire to commemorate World Food Day held every October 16.

The annual event seeks to increase understanding of problems and solutions in the drive to end hunger.

The Nelson Food Cupboard’s “Food Security Fair” will provide an opportunity for the public and  local organizations to continue the local conversation around food security, said organizer Kim Charlesworth.

Tables are free, and this is a good opportunity to network,  she said. (Book tables: foodcupboard@shawbiz.ca)

“We wish to encourage increased awareness and conversation around the reality of hunger in our community, and the incredible efforts going on right here to put meaning to the phrase food is a right.   Food security affects everyone – from local farmers right through the distribution chain to eaters everywhere, “ said Charlesworth.

“Please consider bringing a donation,” she added.

The Salvation Army services located in the lower level of its Vernon Street store will be closed on Thanksgiving Monday, but will be open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. as usual on Tuesday through Thursday, or by appointment, for free showers, laundry, a breakfast and free clothes, among other services.
