Fat Tire Festival celebrates 20th birthday

Nelson Fat Tire Festival turns 20 this weekend.

An event, for kids from two to 72 to enjoy that salutes the memory of avid cyclist Cam Alexander, the Nelson Fat Tire Festival kicks off Thursday at the Rosemont All Wheel Bike Park.

Opening night is set-aside for timed Pump Track Races and the Open Jump Jam.  Must be a cycling club member to participate; Pump Track Races are $2 for each timed lap or 5 for $5. 

Friday, the event moves to Baker Street for the Bike Parade, beginning at 5:45 p.m. and followed by the Show’n’Shine.

There’s also the Kootenay Krawl and Last Wheelie Standing competition.

Saturday is set aside for riding in the Casino Royale Day.

There are rides at 9 a.m., Smallwood Group, 10 a.m., Sacred Ride BlackJack Downhill Shuttle beginning at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Gerick’s Mountain Station Poker Ride.

The Roots, Rocks and Rhythm Party at the Royal Inn follow it all.

Sunday, it’s back to racing again with Morning Mountain Madness.

Registration, available all weekend, closes at 8:30 a.m.

The Nelson and District Credit Union Kids Cross Country race goes at 11: 30 a.m. followed at 1 p.m. by the Downhill Event.
