Erickson, Dubief claim Kootenay Zone Cross Country Championship titles

The West Kootenay will be well represented at the upcoming BC High School Cross Country Championships set for Saturday at Royal Roads University in Victoria.

More than 45 runners qualified for the provincials following Kootenay Zone Championships held last week at the Salmo Ski Hill.

The Zone Championships attracted more than 100 runners from  from Fernie, Jaffray and Invermere in the East Kootenay to L.V. Rogers, J.V; Humphries in Kaslo, Mount Sentinel, Trafalgar, J. Lloyd Crowe in Trail and Boundary Central in Midway in the West 

L.V. Rogers runner Mitchel Erickson will lead the Senior Boys team after capturing the division title with a time of 17 minutes, 52 seconds.

Erickson won the race by more than two minutes over Micah Luchetta of J.V. Humphries in Kaslo.

Louison Dubief of Fernie captured the Senior Girls race in a time of 20:56.

Second was Maya Abraham of L.V. Rogers with teammate Maina Hetu in fourth at 23:56.

Dawson Abraham of Trafalgar, who recently returned from capturing gold at the BC Provincial Cross Country Club Championships, won the Junior Boys race in a time of 13:32.

Aleah Smith of Trafalgar claimed the Junior Girls race, edging Ella Fuller of Fernie in a time of 15:51.

Naimoi Stavast of Salmo was third followed by Keira Badry and Avran Fisher of Trafalgar, in fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the Grade 6-7 race, Oscar Masse of DESK in Nelson won the race in a time of 7:24.

Kaedon Crossland of Trafalgar was second followed by in third by Andrew Metcalfe of Self Design in Nelson.
