Environment Canada has issued an Alert for Highway 3, Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass due to a pending snowstorm expected to hit the West Kootenay Boundary region beginning Monday afternoon.

Environment Canada is calling for snowfall amounts in the range of 20 to 25 cm.

“A strong frontal system will approach the Kootenays today spreading snow to the highway passes,” the Environment Canada website said. “Light snow will become heavier this afternoon and will continue into Tuesday. Total snow accumulations of 20 to 25 cm can be expected for Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass before the snow tapers off late Tuesday.”

Drivers should prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions as visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. As well surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

ShiftIntoWinter.ca reminds drivers to know before you go. Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.

Road conditions are available at DriveBC.

Environment Canada is forecasting for more precipitation for through most of the week.
