The City of Nelson is pleased to announce that the first city electric vehicle (EV) charging station located at the foot of Baker Street in Railtown and is ready to be used by residents and visitors.

The EV charger installation was opened May 25, 2017.

“Installing EV charging stations like this are in keeping with Nelson’s Path to 2040 Environmental Strategy and will benefit both residents and visitors,” said Nelson Mayor Deb Kozak.

The station can charge two cars at one time. Eventually there will be a cost for charging energy; however as part of encouraging EV usage it will initially be zero cost use.

Part of the choice of location was to ensure visitors who are charging their vehicles would be within walking distance of the downtown core.

Nelson Hydro funded and installed this charger which is expected to be the first of many.

The cost for purchase and installation was $36,000 which included provisions for special event power at the foot of Baker Street.

“As the demand for Electric Vehicle charging increases more chargers will be installed and we hope that in the future a good part of our business will be selling energy for vehicle use,” said Alex Love, General Manager of Nelson Hydro.
