You wouldn't know it from the weather outside — unless the topic is last week's early winter blitz — but winter is really on its way.

The Nelson Hydro’s EcoSave Program and the West Kootenay EcoSociety want to get people thinking about energy savings by hosting the fifth annual Annual Green Home and Energy Show, Wednesday, October 4th at the Prestige Lakeside Resort.

The theme of the show is "Heat Pumps 101 – Is a heat pump right for you?"

Those heat pumps are among what is trendy these days, but so are tiny houses, round houses, solar and electric vehicles at the 5th annual trade show that features green and sustainable options for building, renovating and transportation.

"This year we are proud to have Nelson’s very own Seth Reidy, of Nelson Tiny Houses, at the show with one of his Tiny Houses for people to come and take a look inside," said Carmen Proctor, EcoSave Program Manager and main organizers of the annual show.

"Seth is producing an in depth video series (15 episodes) that will teach you how to build the tiny house of your dreams. Come and listen to his presentation on how these houses are becoming the latest popular trend."

Proctor said this event has something for renters and home owners, including lots of giveaways and a chance to win the Grand Prize of $1,000 towards an electric bike by Pedego Canada.

The show hosts a variety of green local vendors on one side of the room, and the other side is set up for you to hear short presentations from the experts.  The feature presentation will teach you how heat pumps work and how to tell if they are right for you, but you can also learn about FortisBC rebates, LED’s, aerial infrared heat mapping, PassiveHouse, and how the EV charging network is about to increase here in the Kootenay region.

Here are some of the main attractions at the Annual Green Home and Energy Show:

  • Electric transportation, learn from those in the community who own and operate electric bikes and cars;
  • Aerial Infrared Heat Mapping, would seeing where the heat is leaking from your home help save you money?
  • Latest in technology, smart thermostats and other big news in energy saving products by Martech SmartSolutions;
  • BC’s first Energy Star home is a round home by Mandala Homes, come and check out why a round home is a greener home.

Proctor said Nelson’s EcoSave Program is designed to simplify the process of making your home more energy efficient, there will be information at the show about energy assessments and how you can use a low interest financing loan for energy upgrades and repay the loan on your Nelson Hydro electric bill.

"Come out and meet your local contractors who specialize in heat pumps, heating in general, insulation and much more," she said.

The Fifth Annual Green Home and Energy Show takes place at the Prestige Lakeside Resort. Doors open at 6:30 p.m and presentations begin at 7 p.m.
