Driver badly injured following cement truck accident at Kootenay Bay Ferry Terminal

Creston RCMP said in a media release that failed brakes was likely the cause of a cement truck accident earlier this month at the Kootenay Bay Ferry Terminal near Crawford Bay.
“Creston RCMP was called to a commercial vehicle collision at the Kootenay Bay Ferry Terminal,” the media release said of the September 13th, 2022, accident.
“The commercial vehicle’s brakes failed, and it crashed at the bottom of hill at the terminal."
The driver lost brakes on the cement truck while driving toward the Kootenay Bay Ferry terminal on Highway 3A west of Crawford Bay at approximately 2 p.m.
However, the driver of loaded cement truck was able to avoid the waiting vehicles parked on the landing before flipping and crashing the truck next to the ferry loading gate parking lot.
Emergency responders needed to cut open the roof of the truck to remove the driver.
“The driver was badly injured and airlifted to hospital (in Kelowna),” RCMP said.
After reviewing the accident scene, Creston RCMP officers determined there was no criminal element to the crash.
The investigation has now been turned over to WorkSafe BC.
The Kootenay Bay Ferry Terminal is located approximately 80 kilometres north of Creston on east shore of Kootenay Lake and five km west of Crawford Bay.
Vehicles on the Kootenay Lake Ferry viewed the cement truck accident from the deck of the boat.
The roof of the cement truck had to be cut open by emergency responders to remove the driver.
