Dr. Phillip Malpass recognized at BC Cancer Summit Awards

Dr. Phillip Malpass of Nelson was recognized at the BC Cancer Summit Awards Dinner held last month at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver.
Malpass, an internist / geriatrician and part of the Community Oncology Network at Kootenay Lake Hospital, received the Patient Care Champion Award as nominated by patients.
The BC Cancer Excellence Awards give us an opportunity to shine a light on some of the inspiring people and teams at BC Cancer.
“I humbly accept this year’s Patient Champion Award recognizing person centric care which has been the focus of my career,” Dr. Malpass said in a video appearing on the BC Cancer website.
“I’ve worked with our partners to provide a scope of services for chronic disease including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disorder and cancer care . . . establishing team-based care in our community hospital.
“This allows multi discipline care to be delivered to a rural population at one location, wrapping the services around the person appropriate to their needs but sensitive to informed decision-making inclusive of their significant partners.
“These teams are dynamic, multi-disciplined, co-located and I would like to recognize their contribution to accepting this award.”
The BC Cancer Excellence Awards highlight the incredible individuals and teams who work to ensure that British Columbians receive world-class, patient-centred cancer screening, treatment and support, or benefit from new discoveries that are helping change the face of cancer.
In 2019, BC Cancerreceived 158 nominations across the six centres in B.C. and selected six award recipients.
Patients, caregivers and members of the public can nominate in the Patient Care Champion category.
Patient Care Champion – this person helps improve patients’ experience, quality of life, quality of care and/or knowledge of the cancer system – either directly or indirectly. Recipients show compassion, ingenuity and leadership, and act as a role model for others.
